Australia 1-1 Brazil: I Stayed Up for Irankunda Free-Kick at 3 AM - Then Rayan Broke My Heart in 95th Minute!

I set alarm for 2:50 AM Morocco time to watch Australia vs Brazil in Townsville. 25,440 fans, Vinícius and Raphinha starting, and a 20-year-old kid called Nestory Irankunda who scored free-kick that made me jump off my couch. Then 95th minute Rayan header. I went from celebrating to silence in 10 seconds.

This was supposed to be friendly. It felt like World Cup final for Townsville.

First Half: VAR Saves Australia - Estêvão Goal Ruled Out at 45'

Brazil started with Ancelotti's dream front 4: Vinícius Jr, Raphinha, Endrick, Estêvão. Plus Bruno Guimarães and Marquinhos. On paper, Australia should lose 3-0.

But Tony Popovic parked the bus perfectly. Socceroos defended with 5-4-1, Harry Souttar winning everything in air.

45th minute drama: Estêvão scored, Brazil celebrated 1-0. But VAR checked - Bruno Guimarães fouled Souttar in buildup. Goal disallowed. I rewatched - clear foul, Bruno pushed Souttar with two hands. Right call.

Halftime 0-0. Australia survived. xG at half: Brazil 0.71, Australia 0.11. Brazil better but no goal.

I noted: "Australia defending like Atletico Madrid, Brazil like 2022 Brazil - lots of flair, no finish."

68th Minute: Irankunda Free-Kick - Goal of The Year Contender

68', Australia win free-kick 22 meters out, central. Who takes? Irankunda, 20 years old, Bayern Munich winger on loan.

What he did next - I have watched 8 times now:

Run-up 5 steps, left foot, power + curl, top corner, Brazilian keeper no chance. Ball speed: looked 105 km/h. Placement: 90-degree corner.

Australia 1-0 Brazil.

Townsville exploded. 25,440 fans roaring. Irankunda did 2 backflips - his trademark. I shouted, woke up my neighbor.

Historical note: Only Australia's second goal vs Brazil in last 15 years. Last was Shaun Murphy winner in 2001 Confederations Cup 1-0. So Irankunda joined Murphy in history.

His free-kick was better than Murphy's though. This was Roberto Carlos style.

69' to 94' - 25 Minutes of Australian Heroic Defending

After goal, Popovic went full defensive: 6-3-1 shape. Every clearance cheered like goal.

Ancelotti reacted: took off Vinícius, Endrick, Estêvão at 72' - brought Pedro, Gabriel Martinelli, and Rayan (Vasco da Gama striker, 19 years old).

Brazil attacked with 7 players. Australia had 10 behind ball.

Patrick Beach (Australia keeper, 22 years old) made 2 big saves:

  • 78' - Raphinha curler, tipped over
  • 86' - Pedro header from 5 yards, saved with legs

At 90', board showed 6 minutes added. I thought: "Australia will do it, famous win."

I was wrong by 1 minute.

95th Minute: Rayan Header - How It Happened

94:30 - Brazil win throw, right side. Raphinha gets ball.

94:48 - Raphinha looks up, 2 Australia defenders tired, gap at back post.

94:55 - Cross, perfect, curling away from keeper. Rayan attacks, jumps above 2 defenders (I think Souttar was exhausted), powerful header down.

94:56 - Beach gets hand to it, but ball hits crossbar and goes in. 1-1.

Silence in Townsville. Then small Brazil section celebrated.

Rayan, 19, Vasco striker, scored with first touch in senior Brazil shirt? Actually second touch. But dramatic equalizer to rescue Brazil from defeat.

For Australia, devastating. They were 60 seconds from beating Brazil for first time in 25 years.

My Tactical Analysis: Why 1-1 Was Fair Despite Heartbreak

Australia (Popovic): Perfect underdog plan. Low block, compact, hit on transition. Irankunda free-kick was bonus, not planned. Defended with heart. 5-4-1 became 6-3-1 after leading. Souttar man of match for Australia until 95' - won 9 aerial duels.

Brazil (Ancelotti): Dominated ball (68% possession), 18 shots vs Australia 6. But too many individual dribbles, not enough team play. Ancelotti depth saved him - Rayan and Martinelli changed game. Raphinha assist was world class cross - outside foot curl.

Stat that tells story: Brazil 18 shots, 4 on target. Australia 6 shots, 2 on target. Both wasteful, but Brazil pressure finally told.

Townsville Night: Why This Friendly Mattered

This was not just friendly:

  • First time Brazil ever played in Townsville
  • Sell-out 25,440 - biggest crowd in stadium history for football
  • Only 12th ever meeting Australia vs Brazil (Brazil won 8, Australia 1, now 3 draws)
  • Preparation for Australia toward 2027 Asian Cup, Brazil building for 2026 World Cup (yes, still Ancelotti even in 2026)

Second friendly in Brisbane in 3 days - expect Ancelotti to rotate heavily. Maybe Endrick starts.

My Ratings and What I Learned

Irankunda 9/10: Free-kick 10/10, rest of game 7/10, but that goal is career-defining

Rayan 7.5/10: Only 23 minutes, 1 shot, 1 goal - super sub

Raphinha 8/10: Assist + 4 chances created, best Brazil player

Souttar 8/10: Until 95' header where he lost Rayan, he was perfect

Beach 7/10: 3 saves, could do nothing on header - too powerful

Lesson: Australia can compete vs elite if they defend like this. Popovic has built organized team. For 2027 Asian Cup, they are dark horse if Irankunda develops.

For Brazil: Ancelotti will be happy with resilience, not happy with performance. Too slow first 60 minutes. Needs more vertical play.

Did you watch Australia vs Brazil at 3 AM like me? Was Irankunda free-kick best Socceroos goal since Tim Cahill vs Netherlands 2014? I think yes. Comment below - I reply to every football comment even at 3 AM.
