Inter Miami 2-2 San Diego: I Watched Messi Free-Kick at 2 AM - How Dreyer Brace Ruined Suárez Winner!

I stayed up until 2 AM to watch Inter Miami vs San Diego at Nu Stadium, and I'm still angry. Messi free-kick at 24' was pure magic - his 20th MLS goal this season - Suárez made it 2-1 at 74' with De Paul assist, and I thought 3 points done. Then Anders Dreyer, Danish guy I never heard before, scored at 82' to make it 2-2. Miami 19 shots, 8 on target, but only 1 point. Story of Miami 2026.

48% possession for Miami, 52% for San Diego, but Miami had 19 shots vs 8. Let me break why Miami can't close games.

Match Facts - Quick Table

Competition: MLS 2026 Regular Season
Match: Inter Miami 2-2 San Diego FC
Venue: Nu Stadium, Miami
Date: September 20, 2026
Scorers: Messi 24', Suárez 74' - Dreyer 12', 82'
Half-time: 1-1

12' Dreyer 0-1 - San Diego Shocks Miami Early

12th minute, Jeppe Tverskov through ball between Aviles and Alba, Dreyer runs, chips over Dayne St. Clair - 0-1 San Diego.

I wrote at 12': "Miami defense sleeping again - Aviles too slow, Alba out of position." San Diego had only 1 shot before that, scored with first shot.

Dreyer - 27-year-old Dane, ex-Anderlecht - was unknown to me but his movement was top. He kept running behind Miami high line.

Miami had to chase from 12' - not ideal vs team that sits deep.

24' Messi Free-Kick 1-1 - His 20th Goal This Season!

Free-kick 22 meters out, right side, Messi vs CJ dos Santos.

Messi does his trademark: 4 steps, curls top-left corner, dos Santos dives but ball already in. 1-1. Top bins.

It was Messi's 20th MLS goal 2026 season, 8th free-kick goal - best free-kick taker in MLS history now. I rewatched 6 times - keeper had no chance, ball swerved late.

Official Miami report says 20 goals - makes Messi top scorer ahead of Benteke 18. Golden Boot race on.

Crowd 19,000 at Nu Stadium went crazy, Messi didn't even celebrate big - he does this every week now.

74' Suárez 2-1 - De Paul Assist, Veteran Finishes

Second half Miami pushed - 11 shots second half vs 3 for San Diego until 74'.

74' goal: Rodrigo De Paul gets ball at halfway, sees Suárez run, through ball perfect between 2 CBs, Suárez first-time right foot, low corner, 2-1 Miami.

Suárez 13th goal this season, De Paul 12th assist - both veterans combining. De Paul now second best assister in MLS behind Lucho Acosta 14.

At 2-1 at 74' I texted friend "Miami finally wins, 2-1 done." I was wrong.

82' Dreyer 2-2 - Brace That Ruined Night

82', San Diego counter, Miami had 7 players forward, Dreyer again. Ball from Tverskov again (2 assists for him), Dreyer cuts inside, shoots past St. Clair who should have saved - ball went through legs.

2-2. Miami players hands on heads. Martino (coach) kicked bottle.

Dreyer brace with only 3 shots - 2 goals, 100% conversion from 2 shots on target. Clinical. His second goal expected goals only 0.11 but he scored.

After 2-2 Miami tried - Messi shot saved at 88', Suárez header over at 90+2', but dos Santos saved 3 big chances at 89', 90+3', 90+5'. San Diego keeper MOTM for them with 6 saves.

Final: 2-2, Miami draws again - 4th consecutive draw in MLS.

Stats That Tell Story - Why Miami Draw

Possession: Miami 48% - San Diego 52% - rare Miami has less ball
Shots: Miami 19 - San Diego 8
On target: Miami 8 - San Diego 3 - but San Diego scored 2 from 3 on target
Big chances: Miami 4 - San Diego 3
xG: Miami 1.75 - San Diego 1.56 - close, but Miami wasted
Passes: Miami 469 - San Diego 505 - San Diego better passing

My note: Miami creates but doesn't kill. 19 shots 1.75 xG should be 3 goals, they got 2. San Diego 8 shots 1.56 xG got 2 - more efficient.

Tactical - Martino Problem

Miami plays 4-3-3 with Messi free role, Suárez striker, De Paul creator. Works to create - 19 shots - but defensively high line kills them. Aviles and Alba both 34+ slow, Dreyer exploited pace.

San Diego played 4-4-2 low block, hit on counter via Dreyer pace. Tverskov 2 assists from deep - he found space because Busquets was tired (subbed at 70').

Martino needs faster CB, otherwise every fast striker will score vs Miami.

Ratings

Messi 8.5/10 - Free-kick goal, 6 chances created, 20th goal season
Suárez 7.5/10 - Goal, 13th of season, but missed 2 chances
De Paul 8/10 - Assist, 12th assist, best passer
Dreyer 9/10 MOTM - Brace, 2 goals from 3 shots, earned point
Tverskov 8/10 - 2 assists
dos Santos 8/10 - 6 saves, kept 2-2
St. Clair 5/10 - Should save Dreyer second

What It Means

Miami now 3rd in East, 5 points behind Cincinnati who have game in hand. 4 draws in row cost them Supporters' Shield race.

San Diego - expansion team 2025 - now 7th in West, fighting for playoffs. Draw at Miami is huge for them.

For Messi - 20 goals, Golden Boot leader, but team not winning. Same story as 2024.

Did you watch Miami 2-2 San Diego at 2 AM? Was St. Clair at fault for Dreyer second goal? I think yes, went through legs. Comment - I reply to all MLS comments.
