Norway 1-2 Portugal Oslo: How Ramos' Lob Silenced 25,953 Fans and Why Jesus Was Right to Bench Ronaldo

Confession: I turned on Ullevaal Stadion stream at 20:45 CET expecting Ronaldo to start. When I saw Ramos on team sheet and Ronaldo on bench, I almost switched off. 90 minutes later, I understood Jorge Jesus better than Portuguese media does.

Portugal won 2-1 away in Oslo. Not because they were better - they weren't. They won because they made Norway pay for one stupid mistake. That's football.

The Félix Goal (17') That Was Actually Ramos Goal

Watch official highlights and you see Félix finishing. Watch full replay like I did at 1 AM and you see different story.

Norway defend with Ajer and Østigård marking Ramos tight. Ramos knows he won't get ball, so he sprints left, taking BOTH centre-backs with him. Gap in middle = 12 meters. Bruno Fernandes finds Félix in that gap. 0-1.

Ronaldo at 41 never does that run. He waits. Ramos created goal without touching ball. I wrote in notes: "This is modern striker movement - selfless."

Félix now 2 goals in 2 Nations League games. Quietly Portugal's best attacker this campaign, not Ronaldo, not Leão.

Halftime Stats That Scared Me as Portugal Fan

I took screenshot at 45':

Norway 9 shots, 0.89 xG - Portugal 5 shots, 0.41 xG. Haaland 4 shots alone.

Portugal led but Diogo Costa already made 2 saves from Haaland. One from close range at 28' - reflex with right hand. If that goes in, 1-1 and different game.

My halftime tweet: "Portugal leading but not controlling. Haaland scores second half, 100%." He did at 51'.

51' and 54' - 3 Minutes That Defined Group A4

51' Haaland 1-1: Corner, second ball, chaos, Haaland taps in. His 65th for Norway. At this point Ullevaal erupted. I could hear it through laptop speakers. Norway unbeaten at home since September 2022 - 14 games - and they smelled 15th.

54' Ramos 1-2: This is why goalkeepers should not try to be midfielders. Nyland receives back pass, tries to play to Østigård, pass is short. Ramos intercepts 30m from goal.

Most strikers blast it. Ramos chips. Delicate lob over Nyland who is off line. Ball bounces once, in. I actually stood up. That is Dennis Bergkamp vs Argentina 1998 technique. Ice cold.

VAR disallowed his second at 58' for offside by half boot. Would have been 1-3 and game over earlier.

Why Costa Deserved MOTM More Than Ramos

Portugal had 12 shots total. Norway had 21. After Ramos made it 1-2, Norway had 12 shots in 36 minutes. Twelve!

Costa saved:

  • 68' Haaland header from 6 yards - point-blank, Costa hands up
  • 82' Ødegaard free-kick top corner - flying save
  • 89' Haaland volley - leg save, like futsal keeper

Final xG: Norway 2.11 - Portugal 0.87. Without Costa, Norway wins 3-2. With him, Portugal steals 3 points. That's what elite keeper does.

The Ronaldo Question: Was Benching Disrespect or Genius?

Ronaldo 41 years old, on bench 90 minutes. Portuguese cameras showed him at 70' - jacket on, not warming up. Reports from Record newspaper say he was "frustrated".

But put yourself in Jesus shoes:

Minute 54 you lead 2-1 away vs Haaland's Norway. Your striker just scored winner with lob. Why bring on 41-year-old who doesn't press? You protect lead.

Jesus was going to bring Ronaldo at 1-1 to win game. At 2-1, he needed defensive winger, not Ronaldo. Logical.

Portugal now: 6 points from 2 games. Beat Wales 1-0, beat Norway 2-1 away. Top of Group A4. And they did it proving they can win WITHOUT Ronaldo in big away game. That's bigger than 3 points - that's message for 2026 World Cup.

Ramos is 24. Ronaldo is 41. Transition is happening whether fans like it or not.

What Norway Did Wrong (Besides Nyland)

Solbakken will watch video and hate it:

1. Nuno Mendes was weak link - Norway attacked his side 67% of time, he lost 7 duels

2. 21 shots but only 5 on target - wasteful

3. Nyland - second error leading to goal in 3 games. He did same vs Austria. For World Cup playoff, Norway needs better keeper.

Norway's home unbeaten run ends at 14. Painful way to lose it - goalkeeper error.

Group A4 Now: Portugal Almost Qualified

Portugal 6 pts
Norway 3 pts (beat Wales 2-0 before)
Wales 0 pts

Portugal needs 4 points from next 3 games to qualify for quarter-finals. Norway needs to beat Wales home and away.

My Player Ratings (Honest)

Ramos 8.5/10 - Movement created first goal, scored winner, lob was world class

Costa 9/10 - 6 saves, won game

Félix 7.5/10 - Goal, good link-up

Haaland 7/10 - Goal but missed 2 big chances, could have had 3

Nyland 2.5/10 - Cost his team historic unbeaten run

Prediction: Ronaldo starts next game vs Wales (Jesus rotates). But Ramos will start at World Cup 2026. Tonight proved it.

Do you agree Jesus was right to keep Ronaldo on bench? I think yes for this game. But for World Cup, you still need Ronaldo on bench for 20 minutes. What's your take? Comment below.
