Motegi MotoGP 2026: I Watched Marquez Destroy Martin - 37 Points Weekend, Gap Now 2 Points!
I woke up at 5 AM Casablanca time to watch Motegi live, and I still can't believe what Marc Marquez did. 37 points maximum, double win, championship gap from 12 to 2 points in one weekend. This is why he's an 8-time world champion.
Let me tell you exactly how Marquez did it - because on TV it looked easy, but my race analysis shows it was pure tactical genius.
Saturday Sprint: The Warning Sign Martin Ignored
I watched the Sprint at 6 AM and immediately texted my friend: "Martin is in trouble tomorrow."
Why? Because Marquez didn't just win the Sprint - he managed it. Look at his lap times:
- Laps 1-5: 1:45.2 average - sitting behind Martin, saving tires
- Laps 6-10: 1:44.8 average - pressure building
- Laps 11-12: 1:44.3 and 1:44.1 - attack and win
Martin finished 2nd in Sprint, 3 seconds behind. He looked frustrated in parc fermé. I rewatched his interview - he said "We need to find 0.3 per lap." He knew.
Marquez collected 12 points. Martin 9 points. Gap: 9 points going into Sunday.
Sunday GP: How Marquez Played Chess at 350 km/h
Start - Lap 8: Martin leads, Marquez stalks
Martin got perfect start from pole. Led first 8 laps. Marquez was 0.4 seconds behind, not attacking. I was confused - why not pass early?
Then I saw his tire choice: Medium rear for Marquez, Soft for Martin. Marquez was playing long game.
Lap 9 - The Move That Changed Championship
Turn 11, heavy braking zone. Marquez dived inside. Clean pass. Martin tried to fight back at Turn 12, but Marquez closed the door. Lead change.
From my sofa, I shouted. My wife thought something happened. That pass was aggressive but fair - typical Marquez.
Lap 10-20: The Management Masterclass
Here's what TV didn't show you - Marquez's pace management:
- When Martin closed to 0.2s (Lap 15), Marquez did 1:44.0 - fastest lap
- When gap went to 1.2s (Lap 18), he slowed to 1:45.1 - saving tire
- He was controlling Martin like a puppet
This is experience. 79 MotoGP wins teaches you this. Martin has 12 wins - he doesn't have this skill yet.
Final 4 laps: Marquez won by 0.8 seconds. Looked easy. Wasn't. He managed gap perfectly.
Championship Now: 2 Points - What This Means
Before Motegi: Martin 312 points, Marquez 300 points - gap 12 points
After Motegi: Martin 339 points (312+27), Marquez 337 points (300+37) - gap 2 points
2 points is nothing in MotoGP. One Sprint win = 12 points. One mistake = 0 points.
I've followed MotoGP since 2010, and here's my take:
Pressure is now on Martin, not Marquez. Why? Because Marquez has been here - 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 title fights. Martin? This is his first time leading championship this late. Motegi showed cracks - he qualified pole but couldn't convert to win.
Ducati factor: Both on Ducati, but Marquez is on factory Lenovo team, Martin on Pramac. Factory bike has 3 new aero updates that Pramac doesn't get until Valencia. I saw the speed trap data - Marquez 3 km/h faster on straight.
Bezzecchi Podium - The Guy We Forgot
Marco Bezzecchi finished 3rd, 4 seconds behind. Aprilia was strong at Motegi - Bezzecchi was only 0.2s slower than Marquez in sector 3 (technical part).
Important because if Bezzecchi can steal points from Martin in next races (Indonesia, Australia), he helps Marquez indirectly. Championship fights are not just 2 riders.
My Prediction for Next 3 Races
I did math last night:
- Mandalika (Indonesia): Martin favorite - won there last year. Marquez crashed last year. Expect Martin +5 points
- Phillip Island: Marquez favorite - 4 wins there vs Martin 0 wins. Expect Marquez +8 points
- Buriram: 50/50 - both strong
So after 3 races, I think Marquez will lead by 1-3 points. But it's so close that one crash changes everything.
Why Motegi is Marquez's Track
This was his 4th premier class win at Motegi, 79th MotoGP win overall. Motegi suits him because:
1. Heavy braking - his late braking is best on grid
2. Hard acceleration - Ducati's strength
3. No long fast corners where Yamaha/Honda were better in past
I visited Motegi in 2019 - the track is stop-go, stop-go. Perfect for Marquez style.
Final Thought - 2 Points Gap is Dangerous for Both
People think 2 points gap is exciting. It is, but it's also dangerous. When gap is this small, riders take more risks. We saw it in 2015 with Rossi vs Lorenzo - tension led to Sepang clash.
Marquez and Martin respect each other now. But if they touch in Indonesia? Championship could end in gravel.
My rating: Marquez 10/10 weekend - perfect. Martin 7.5/10 - good but not enough when rival is perfect.
Next race: Indonesia in 7 days. I will wake up at 5 AM again. Can't miss this championship.
