Phillip Island delivered a spectacular opening day for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. Under sunny skies, Marco Bezzecchi set the pace in Friday's MotoGP practice, leading an impressive Aprilia performance that saw four riders from the Italian manufacturer finish inside the top five.
Marc Márquez was the rider separating the Aprilias at the front and rear of the leaderboard. The Ducati Lenovo Team star finished third, with Raúl Fernández second, Ai Ogura fourth and Jorge Martín fifth. Official race coverage is available through MotoGP.

Bezzecchi Wins the Friday Battle
Bezzecchi finished at the top of the practice classification with a fastest lap of 1:26.775. The Italian's afternoon was not completely straightforward: he crashed at Turn 4 during the opening stages after contact with Álex Márquez. The incident scattered debris and led to the first red flag of the session.
The interruption did not prevent Bezzecchi from recovering. He returned to the track, found the pace needed for a late qualifying-style push and ultimately claimed first place.
Raúl Fernández completed an Aprilia one-two for the Trackhouse team, finishing just 0.072 seconds behind Bezzecchi.
Marc Márquez: The Ducati Between Four Aprilias
Márquez had shown strong speed throughout the day. After leading the morning session, he remained a serious contender during afternoon practice and briefly raised the benchmark with a late series of quick laps.
The final classification placed him third. Bezzecchi and Fernández finished ahead of him, while Ogura and Martín completed the top five. Márquez was only 0.126 seconds off the leading time.
A Wallaby Causes a Second Red Flag
Phillip Island's wildlife provided one of the day's most unusual moments. After the earlier crash, the session was interrupted again when a small wallaby appeared on the circuit. Race officials stopped the action to allow the track to be checked before practice resumed.
Alex Márquez and the Fight for the Top Ten
Álex Márquez finished sixth despite the earlier incident with Bezzecchi and a later crash at Turn 4. Enea Bastianini placed seventh for KTM Tech3, followed by Pedro Acosta in eighth.
Diogo Moreira secured ninth place, while Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the top ten. Those ten riders earned direct passage to Q2.
Several notable names finished outside that group. Johann Zarco was 11th, home rider Jack Miller placed 12th, and championship contender Francesco Bagnaia ended the session 14th.

Championship Context: Martín and Márquez in Focus
The battle at the front carries significance beyond Friday's timesheets. Martín arrived at the Australian weekend leading Márquez by just two points, making every qualifying and race session important to their championship contest.
Martín finished fifth, behind three other Aprilia riders and Márquez. While that was enough for direct entry into Q2, the Spaniard will be looking to find more speed as the weekend progresses.
Weather Could Change the Weekend
The conditions were sunny and dry on Friday, but the forecast suggested that cooler temperatures and rain could complicate Saturday and Sunday's running. That uncertainty makes Friday's results useful but not conclusive.
What Comes Next at Phillip Island?
Aprilia has made the strongest statement of the opening day, placing four bikes in the top five and securing the leading time through Bezzecchi. Márquez, meanwhile, has every reason to remain optimistic with only 0.126s off the leader.
